Advisors need pre-requisite skills, an equipment package,
training and certification, and a marketing license to operate as
an official ecoEnergy advisor under the program. For more details,
see below.
Pre-requisite skills
Advisors generally need home inspector training or a minimum of
two years experience in the building/renovation industry. An
understanding of construction terminology and household heating
appliances is critical. Advisors need to be physically fit,
computer literate, and have excellent communication skills.
Equipment requirements
In addition to their own vehicle, advisors need a blower door,
notebook computer (1GHz or higher) with high speed internet
connection, ladder and small hand tools. The equipment is
mandatory. Approximate cost of purchasing a new advisor equipment
kit is $5,000. Energy Wise Solutions may assist an Advisor in the
purchasing of such equipment.
Training
An Advisor training course is run over 4 consecutive days and
includes both classroom theory and field practice. The instructor
is responsible for reviewing an advisor's certification houses.
Computer/software set-up and ongoing technical support is made
available as part of the training and certification process.
Certification
After the training course an Energy Advisor must complete 5
assessments on their own to be officially certified.
Energy Wise solutions reserves the right to de-certify
advisors who do not follow program guidelines or contravene the
code of ethics. Regular quality assurance is performed on all
advisors by Energy Wise Solutions. Quality assurance includes
surveys with customers and on-site visits to evaluations by our
field coaches.
Code of Ethics
Advisors must be professionals who are independent and unbiased.
Advisors cannot sell energy retrofits on behalf of a renovator. If
a relationship exists between an Advisor and a renovator, the
customer must acknowledge the relationship in writing prior to
receiving their report. Advisors must be paid directly for the
service by the homeowner. Advisors are not allowed to make specific
referrals to a renovator or accept payments for leads.
Advisors must have permission from their customers to share
reports with a renovator. Advisors must deliver the report directly
to the homeowner. Advisors cannot make recommendations about
specific manufactured products.
Contractual Agreement
Advisors must follow detailed procedures and guidelines
established by the ecoEnergy initiative program and Energy Wise
Solutions. Advisors sign a legal contract with Energy wise
solutions. Advisors' customers must sign a form allowing Energy
Wise Solutions to release their home's ecoEnergy related data to
Natural Resources Canada.
